So a while ago i went to try Ubuntu but was having some trouble with it so i went back to vista. So then a week ago my laptop started acting funny (1 day after my warranty expired as well) and then it just totally died out. HP says they can send me boot discs for 40 bucks, not worth it and i received the Ubuntu Cd in the mail as well, and now i need some major help trying to get my laptop wireless to work because University has already started and my main work machine needs Ubuntu on it. The first thing so far im noticing that i cannot detect my wireless network, my laptop is an HP pavilion dv2000 (2410ca to be specific). Can anyone guide me in the right direction with this problem!?!?

You may need madwifi. Also it would help a lot to know what kind of wifi chip is in your laptop. Post the results of lspci | grep [w,W]ireless If that does not show any results just post the results of lspci by itself. Once you know what chip you have you can search the forums for matching or similar chips or search google.
