I have read about gtkpod being good for managing an iPod with, and I have had a Nano 3g for about a year, but never used it under Linux.

I now want to do so, and have tested Rhythmbox 0.11.6 under Intrepid Ibex alpha-4 and it works great (connect recognition etc) from what I can tell, even with 1.1.2 firmware. I downloaded some podcasts from iTunes and they all showed up in Rhythmbox. I have not tested music yet or cover art, but I have a general question:

Where do you download media from if you don't have iTunes?

With iTunes, it seems, from my limited experience of that app, that you can get podcasts, music, tv shows etc from one source. Now, I know there is no iTunes clone for Linux and Rhythmbox doesn't seem to have integration to media sites in the same way, so where do I get TV shows from or Discovery channel podcasts from or Swedish documentary shows from (SVT & P3).

Is it just a case of searching on bittorrent and converting formats not supported to aac/mp4?

I really don't want to use iTunes, because the lock-in feature of making you wipe your iPod before you can attach it to another installation of iTunes on another computer sucks big time, but if I have XP at work with iTunes and Ubuntu at home then it seems to work ok.

EDIT:

I tested connection with Hardy Heron/Rhythmbox and it mounts OK, sees podcasts and artwork and I can move music to the iPod and it will convert on the fly from OGG to m4a, but the music is not saved onto the ipod upon disconnection. Hopefully this is fixed in .11.6 which I have not fully tested yet.
