View Full Version : [ubuntu] Unstable desktop after fresh install

Hi ! I just got myself a brand new PC and after a year or so of being an Arch Linux user, I thought I'd give Ubuntu another shot. The first time I tried it, it did a pretty good job, except now... it's not much of a success for me.

Right now, if I open Firefox and then close it, it won't come back ever : it's impossible to start it once more. Starting it from a Konsole simply hangs the console and gives no output at all.

And that's my second problem : I had to install KDE's Konsole because, for some reason, GNOME terminal hangs right after starting.

And the third problem I've got is that, at random moments, GNOME's task bar and menus will stop responding. I can still, for instance, Alt-Tab between apps. My first thought was to kill X with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace but then I get back to the login screen, log in and... nothing. I just get Ubuntu's tan background and nothing else.

So... I've no idea really what might be going wrong here. If you have any idea, fire away. :)

Try turning off desktop effects and see if you can reproduce the problems.
