The day has almost come - just waiting for it to be actually downloadable. It is to be open source. Discuss.

I really like the features of it all (Especially the sad tab thing, I hate firefox crashing all of my tabs just because of a youtube video), but I just wonder if they will be able to implement it all. :s, I'll love google if they can come out with this . :D

I'm using it the second it comes out.
The idea of each tab acting like it's own process is great.
They implemented lots of good ideas from other browsers (firefox, opera, IE8 ) and added some of theirselfs.
And it uses Webkit!
And is Open Source!
And will have superiour Javascript capabilities than any other browser!
I smell awesomeness.
--
ps: It was a smart move of them to use comics to explain it. Just a plain text article with some pictures would be boring.

Since I posted I've been reading the comic book (http://blogoscoped.com/google-chrome/) and I have to say this is going to be truely awesome.
I notice it doesn't say anything about operating systems - but I seriously doubt Google would build something that doesn't run on all three of Windows, Mac and Linux. It may especially benefit us on Linux, with the sad state of crashing flash.

I agree, not just because of KDE themes and stuff, Opera uses Qt4 and looks fine in Gnome too, Google could obviously achieve that if they wish as well.
Also I feel that Qt is just a superior toolkit to GTK in many ways, would you really dislike if it was like Skype or Opera and had it's theme work perfectly well on Gnome, but was still Qt?
I've seen many Qt apps that looked fine on Gnome, every GTK app I've ever used has looked horrible in KDE.
EDIT: I'm just assuming that the main problem is themes, since my main problem with GTK is that they look terrible on KDE. Which doesn't affect Qt with the proper effort done by the developers of the program, it may not fit into your Gnome theme but it would look a lot better than a GTK program does on KDE

Yes, but Qt apps don't always look horrid in Gnome, which means, in my eyes, unless it will ONLY be a Gnome app, choosing GTK is just wrong. Unfortunately many people here just think in terms of "Will it look good in Ubuntu with Gnome" rather than "What is the best choice for a Windows/Mac/Linux program that should look good in all DEs".
I'm annoyed enough that Firefox does this, if Opera worked better with Flash I would definitely switch.

Personally, I think that they will take more users from Firefox/Opera/Safari than IE. Since the majority of IE users just don't bother changing.
I'm interested in seeing if extensions will be supported or widely used, and how much they can interact with the web pages and browser itself due to the sandboxxing.

Two gigantic corporations can play at that game. And are, as a matter of fact. Google already shells out tons of money to have its software preinstalled on some brands of computers and other devices -- it's only natural that they would extend this strategy to their browser, paying to have it replace IE as the default after it's been established as being just as solid and usable as any other browser.

That's true but i think google is the only company of that magnitude, that supports open/free programs, that could "infiltrate" in the ignorant computer users. Nevertheless those are habits of the previous generation, that will change soon.

I'm not quite convinced that Google is "working hard" on a version for Mac and Linux. Last I heard they were "working hard" on getting a lot of their other apps running in Linux. More than likely we will get a *asterdized version of Google Chrome that requires Wine to run it. Google has made a lot of promises to the Linux community and then drag their feet. I'm not all that impressed...yet

I wonder why they take the linux version so lightly. Surely linux have a lot fewer users than windows but if you release a version for linux you get like >100,000 users almost instantly. Everyone using linux will "dare" or even look forward to use a new web browser.
And i'm a bit afraid about that "working hard" since they are working hard for months for the google earth plugin on linux and still no result.

I consider a Wine version second class to native GTK/QT. Making it look completely different from the local theme is not a good thing in my mind (the blue borders), and while I'm at it, I hope they don't plaster the name and logo all over it.
If it is as smooth and simple as they say, it will get noticed without having the stupid Google logo staring you in the face each time you use it. They're already huge. Ease up on the branding and give the user a break.
With that said, good luck Google!

Well, good thing that it's OSS, else I'd never even consider using it as I wouldn't trust Google. I am still evaluating the situation regarding Google and privacy, so I will wait and see.
I am perfectly fine with Konqueror at the moment, so I most likely won't give it a spin anytime soon now. But it's nice to have an alternative (and seeing Google hitting IE).

September 2nd, 2008, 09:21 AM
Some IE users don't know that IE is a web browser. Let's not generalize to much. I don't think I've ever met anybody who didn't know that (though I've met many who wasn't aware that there's alternatives to IE).
You've never met my father :-)
As hard as I try he just is not interested in understanding the the how or the why. As long as his laptop turns on, "the internet" comes up when he clicks the big blue e, and his homepage is yahoo mail, he's good.
There are many people like this. I have run across quite a few who have (for example) asked me to help them "fix their internet" when they have deleted the shortcut from their windows desktop, etc.
IMHO Google will not reach this market becuase 'Install a new Browser' or 'Install a new Internet' will not even catch their eye. They will either be too afraid of breaking something, or they will ask, "what's wrong with my old internet? it works fine".
But I love google and am so excited for the linux release. But until then, I will also be trying it in Wine.

I understand that these people are there, I just don't think they cover a majority of people. You really do get browsers from many sources these days: cell-phones, palms, playstations, etc. As long as these all use different browsers, people who use them also have to accept that the "Internet" can be reached through many more means than just IE. I always end up making this argument, but I think it comes down to a generation thing. Yes fathers, depending on their age and profession, may be in the dark about these things. But little brothers and sisters and the more tech-savvy youth is not going to be so ignorant.

For all of us that are bored and have read everything we possible can about Google Chrome...
http://blogs.ft.com/techblog/2008/09/top-ten-thoughts-on-google-chrome/
Herewith, 10 initial thoughts on Google’s new Chrome browser, based on its cartoon introduction:
1. Why a cartoon? What happened to the YouTube explanatory video? Are online cartoons the next big thing and is Google Chrome the red herring?
2. It’s a major rethink of the browser and a much more fully formed product than the usual Google beta.
3. Why couldn’t they work with Mozilla on this? Answer: they need more control over the user experience and their ability to serve ads - Microsoft and Mozilla have been taking some of that away with their latest releases.
4. Google makes a lot of solving the problem of browsers crashing when too many tabs are open and a javascript fails to execute- but who, other than superusers, really considers this a problem?
5. This is very OS-like - even down to imitating the Windows operating system Task Manager.
6. There is a fuller integration of Google Gears, making it easier for Google applications and the browser to replace the Windows desktop.
7. The address bar innovation seems aimed at combating Firefox’s similar “awesome” bar, which must have taken some search queries and advertising dollars away from Google.
8. Privacy innovations seem to match Microsoft’s “porn mode” in IE8.
9. Google says it is making the browser open source so others can take advantage of its innovations, but it needs to do so to make other browsers more compliant with its business.
10. Could this comic book be the cue for a geek superhero movie?

1. Why a cartoon? What happened to the YouTube explanatory video? Are online cartoons the next big thing and is Google Chrome the red herring? Why not just a static page you can skim with appropriate bold type for emphasis? I'm impressed with the work Scout McCloud did, but it's not very efficient for getting information across to readers. And most people (i.e., not programmers or power users) will be confused by the third page anyway.
3. Why couldn’t they work with Mozilla on this? Answer: they need more control over the user experience and their ability to serve ads - Microsoft and Mozilla have been taking some of that away with their latest releases. I thought the comic strip made it quite clear they wanted to start from the ground up. The changes they're making are so revolutionary, it'd take too long to change Firefox into that.
4. Google makes a lot of solving the problem of browsers crashing when too many tabs are open and a javascript fails to execute- but who, other than superusers, really considers this a problem? Everyone who uses more than one tab or who has had an error come about from Javascript considers it a problem. They may not know the source of the problem, but people are, of course, bothered by any performance hit.
9. Google says it is making the browser open source so others can take advantage of its innovations, but it needs to do so to make other browsers more compliant with its business. And that's wrong how?

AARGH! I haven't used Windows for WEEKS (dual boot), and it died a few days ago, and now I need it. GRRR!
*Takes a few deep breaths*
Google, why oh why didn't you do a simultaneous, all-platform release? It would've made a whole lot less angry Linux users...(well Mac OS too, but "Macs are glorified Fisher-Price activity centres for adults" --Charlie Brooker)

it says on that page that the browser wont run even if it builds...
Note: If you want to use a Chromium-based browser, you should look elsewhere. Although many Chromium modules build under Linux and a few unit tests pass, nothing actually runs.

Im using it now in my XP on Virtual Box. Looks nice. Simple. Basic... imported all my Firefox data in a matter of a second or two. Scrolling is quick.
There are two buttons to the right of the input bar... "control the current page" with an icon of a piece of paper w/ folded corner, and also the icon of a wrench titled "customize & control google chrome". Theres not a heck of a lot of options. CTRL+SHFT+N puts you incognito mode... pages you look through there "will not appear in your browser history or search history."
So far I like. Its simple, downloaded my FF links and link bar so Im happy. Too bad they didnt make it able to use Firefoxes apps :)
