View Full Version : [ubuntu] New Serval Performance?

Hi,
I'd like to buy a Serval Performance, but it says it's out of stock, and it has said this for a few weeks now. Any word on when it will be on stock? And does this mean it's being updated?
Thanks!

It'll be back in a week or two, and it will be updated. To be informed of its release, create an account on our website and sign up for our low-volume newsletter. We will be making product release announcements there first.

Any idea of the differances between the Pangolin Performance and this model. I like the specs of the Pangolin Performance, but who knows what the serval will be like. I need to get a laptop on order soon, as my deal with Dell exploded. I will never deal with them again.

There are some nice differences, but R&D is keeping it under their hat until they finish testing.

Hmm I see that I can buy serval online right now. Is it the updated model? Or is the updated model yet to be released and what is available on the site right now is the old one?
Thanks!

Look closer... If you click "configure and buy" or whatever the button is, it says "out of stock".
I imagine that as soon as the new one is ready the orders will come pouring in. I know I'm keeping my finger on the trigger!

I see the website's been updated... but the Serval is gone, and replaced by the Bonobo.
The Bonobo's specs are sweet, but the price jump is incredible. Will the Serval return as a 4th option (situated in price/specs somewhere between the Pangolin and the Bonobo)?

Yeah, check out the thread "Kingkong laptop", there someone from system 76 confirms it will return.
Which is great, but means more waiting! :)

The Serval is definitely coming soon. I spoke with R&D, and they will be releasing it. I also played with it, and it is a VERY sweet machine.
That's all I can divulge at the moment.

Man, that's great news. I didn't even see the other thread... my bad.
Just didn't connect Bonobo = Kong... after seeing the configuration, though, that's an apt description.

I noticed that that the bonobo screen options are both super glossy, will the new serval have a matte option like you originally described:confused:

Yes, there definitely is. Keep your eye on the website over the next few days. I don't know the exact day and hour, but the gears are turning fast around here to make it available.

Wow! What a computer. I'm almost definitely buying one of these. But I can't make up my mind about a few things. A couple of questions:
1) I prefer Matte over Glossy, but i notice Matte has a much higher resolution (and price too :)). I'm not sure I want that much resolution all the time. Does it support lower resolutions? I ask because my LCD monitor supports 1680x1050 and only that. In theory it supports other resolutions, but they look like crap.
2) Is the Darter going to be updated soon? If so, I'd prefer to wait, to see what's in store (if so, will it have a better graphics card than integrated X4500HD?)
3) Is the Targus Sport Computer Bag water-resistant? (I'm talking about rain, not submerging it on a pool)
4) How long will it take to ship to canada? :D

Bah, great computer but not what I was looking for.
I really want something in between Pangolin and Serval. Pangolin would be perfect if it had a 9600 GT.

Yes, you could set it to lower resolutions, but things might look a little out of whack. The high resolution screens are pretty nice, though. I definitely like them. Everything seems... crisper.
2) Is the Darter going to be updated soon? If so, I'd prefer to wait, to see what's in store (if so, will it have a better graphics card than integrated X4500HD?)
No, the current Darter is here for a while.
3) Is the Targus Sport Computer Bag water-resistant? (I'm talking about rain, not submerging it on a pool)
I don't think it's *designed* to be any more water resistant than any other backpack with zippers. I doubt light sprinkling would get through. I wouldn't want to test it in a torrential downpour.
4) How long will it take to ship to canada?
8-10 days from order to delivery (however, the Serval won't start shipping until the end of this month).

I'm probably going to buy the Pangolin soon, but I'm a little concerned by several comments in this thread about its graphics card. I'm not the most knowledgeable person in the world when it comes to hardware (in fact, I've never had anything but integrated video cards), so I was wondering; for those who'd like a better card than the 9300M GS, what types of applications are you running? Gaming, high end media editing?

I would have liked something in the Nvidia 9500-9600 range. The 9300 should be fine but I dislike the presence of only 256MB of VRAM and it being with only DDR2 when trying to future-proof a computer. It gives me a hard time justifying the purchase compared to a few others I've come across.

For me its gaming. Honestly the 9300m is good for pretty much everything else.

I usually buy a can of spray silicone and then treat the bags. You can buy it in any sporting/outdoor goods department of most stores. It take a day or so to cure (no longer be stinky), but then it sheds water like a duck. All for about $5 US.

Also on the bag, if it's the same one I have, there is a large flap that covers the top zipper, with a case inside of the bag for the 'top as well. Very good in the rain, but then again I'm not sure if this is the same one s76 carries (help me out Tom?).

The bag changes every so often, so I'm not really sure. They are all nice, high-quality bags, but I'm sure the feature set shifts.

I was looking at the dimensions of the laptop and the height is measured as 1.45~1.95". What does that mean?
ps. I didn't even notice it until I was staring at the specs today, but 7 lbs! Wow, where does most of the weight come from? Most 15.4" laptops are between five to about six and a half pounds. Does that weight include the ac adaptor?

That is the thickness at the front versus the thickness at the back.
where does most of the weight come from?
The chassis is made largely of brushed metal.
Does that weight include the ac adaptor?
No.
