I have a Sony Vaio PCG-993L with Windows XP Pro SP3 installed. I don't have an extra copy of XP, I just have Ubuntu. I wanted to upgrade to Ubuntu, yes upgrade. I'm tired of XP.

Ok I'll get down to the point. I need to know if the 8.04 Ubuntu will work with my laptop. Like hardware specs. Everything on this laptop hasn't been upgraded, changed, added, or removed. Its all factory. So if anyone knows if Ubuntu will work on my laptop, tell me.

BTW: I already searched the wiki part of Ubuntu.com for help and didn't find my computer in the laptops tested section.

First, the best way to test it is to download and burn to a CD (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download) one of the LiveCD images or to request one be sent to you (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu). That way you can run Ubuntu from the CD and test the hardware, check the results fo various system tools that report the hardware, and so on, without affecting the currently installed operating system or documents.

It seems the model number for the PCG-993L is PCG-FX340. It is hard to find specifications on it now since it is old in laptop terms, but I did find this half-broken Sony page (http://www2.sony.com/SEL/consumer/ss5/portable/vaio/notebookmodels/pcg-fx340_specs.shtml). Is that the same model?

Yeah, the bottom right henge of the monitor has a sticker that says PCG-FX340.

But I never thought of running Ubuntu from the CD. I'm going to try it and report later today after work, 9:30PM CDT :)
