I was browsing the usage statistics for linux this years and last.

At the W3 counter in July of last year Ubuntu was behind windows Xp, 2000, 98 and OSX.
Linux had 1.3% usage.

This year it's behind Vista, Xp, 2000, and OSX.
Linux has 1.9% of usage.
http://www.w3counter.com/globalstats.php?date=2008-07-31

Among the more technical crowd of the W3school linux is nearly 4% up from about 3.4%
More interesting however is among technical people Linux has displaced 2000.

I have a 2000 install on one side of my cube and I have to say that less and less software installs on it. I think by next year Linux will be number 4 on w3counter. The best thing to see here is Linux usage is still climbing at a pretty decent rate.

I know where I work now we hand out open office to any one without a valid office install. I wish I could find figures on office vs open office.

I am happy to say I am wrong in my prediction. In December of 2008 Linux overtook windows 2000. It now holds 4th place on the W3 counter. WOOT!

Thank God, I was worried the world had gone insane. Windows 2000 is terrible!

Interesting to see the somewhat failed adoption of Windows Vista on the web. I guess that's the effect of all those corporate workstations and netbooks running XP. May also have something to do with how Internet Explorer always crashes before you can do anything - let alone get counted by the W3 Counter.
Firefox has some cute numbers, too. Look at how the percentage of Firefox 2 users is almost the same while that of Firefox 3 has gone up sharply!
Oh, and finally Internet Explorer 6 is dying!

Interesting year :)

I am going to keep updating this thread so if a moderator would like to move it into reoccuring that would be appreciated.

Happy belated Lindependence day!
New July stats...

Among general internet users Linux usage seem to have been falling since April and is now at 2.02%. Which is still a net gain over last year. Perhaps the early netbook Linux success produced a success but was crushed by Microsoft dumping XP at cost.
Whatever the reason ordinary people seem to be using less Linux and that is a trend we need to reverse.

At the more technical crowd of the W3 schools the statistics look far more healthy with a continuing increase. Among this crowd Linux has 4.3% of the users.

Overall the trend is up, but that slight dip in non-technical users does feel troubling.

I've added a poll so you can let me know if you want this thread to continue...

you are doing an amazing job!
I think it would be helpful if you knew a dev who could create a usage statistic software for ubuntu and fedora pre-installed.

I've added a poll so you can let me know if you want this thread to continue...Sorry...I just skewed your poll because it is multiple choice...and I chose all of them. Maybe edit it to one choice only?

A quick update and some commentary

The September W3 global stats
4 Windows 7 2.05%
5 Linux 1.84%

The October W3 global stats
4 Windows 7 2.76%
5 Linux 2.14%

The more technical W3 schools shows Linux holding it's ground at a respectable ~4% range of advanced users
http://www.w3schools.com/browsers/browsers_os.asp

At first I thought Linux was losing non-technical users over the past few months but I think what I've seen was a trend of people testing out the various OS's during spring and fall releases, but not sticking around for whatever reason. The good new is Linux is not in decline, the bad news is some people are testing and not liking what they see. The spring also seemed to have more testers in April then the fall in October.

I would like to see the number of users up to some magical number to see more commercial software ports, however there doesn't appear to have been any real gains in users this year... :(

The poll is pointless cause the visitors to W3 are more advanced then the average user.
