You don't need anti-virus in Ubuntu/ Linux because of the security model that is enforced. Viruses won't affect Ubuntu, because, to affect a system, it must have root privileges. If you share files with users of the Windows OS, then you may want to scan files before sending them, to ensure they are not affected- you can scan files using Clam- AV, which is available in the repositories.

Agree with WRDN - just like to add that all the virus scanners, including the open-source clamav, look for viruses that affect windows.

I agree you wont need one unless regularly sharing with windows users or drives, if you do feel the need theres plenty available like Avast, ClamAV etc

If you aren't running a mail server or something you don't need a Anti-Virus scanner.

If you share files with windows users, tell them to install an Anti-Virus scanner, you don't need to protect them or ruin your user experience because of them.

If an effective and new virus for Linux ever appeared, having anti-virus installed wouldn't protect you from it.

There is no such thing as a good anti-virus on any OS.
