what's the best video to buy card atm?

i am building a new pc (E8400) and my only concern is the gpu as i heard recent gpus dont work well with linux.

i am not going to play any games etc on linux so should i get an nvidia or an ati, which one of the following cards would be better?
9600gt 8800gt hd4850?

i will use (most likely) kubuntu (kde3.5) + compiz. the most important things are the video playback and desktop.

If your not going to be playing any games, a cheap nVidia 7 series card might be best. I used to have one and it performed very well.
