Hello all! I've been lurking at these forums for a bit, but finally decided to post something as well. What would be a better introductory post than some praise for Ubuntu? Sorry if this post is too long.
I installed Hoary a couple of months ago, simply because I wanted to try out something new. I've been using Linux as my primary desktop system since 1998, and because I like trying out new stuff, I've been fiddling with quite a few distros since that, including the major players and the smaller, obscure ones.
A couple of years ago, I settled for Debian. It was my favorite distro because it was so easy to keep up-to-date, but for newcomers I always recommended my second favorite, SuSE. Generally, I hated all the RPM based Linux distros, except SuSE - I often told people that SuSE would be the perfect Linux distro if it had APT. However, I noticed all the "easy" or "newbie-friendly" Debian based distros failed. All of them disappointed me.
A couple of months ago I noticed everyone and their dog was praising this new Linux distro, Ubuntu. I was positively surprised when I realized it was based on Debian. Out of sheer curiosity, I figured I'll try it out.
Installing an OS has never been easier than installing Ubuntu, and I've installed quite a few OS'es, including Windows. Everything went smoothly, and all my hardware was properly detected and configured. Amazing.
When I booted into my new system for the first time, I freaked out a bit, though. I hadn't read any manuals before installing, and I thought something had gone wrong because I hadn't been asked to set a root password. I figured I'll look it up on the net, but then I remembered the installer hadn't asked anything about my internet connection, and I freaked out again.
However, it turned out my net was already configured, like everything else, and after a little bit of googling, my root user problem was solved. After poking around my new Linux system, I was very impressed because everything just simply... worked. Out of the box.
Since then, Ubuntu has been my favorite distro. It's easy to install and use, but it has the power of Debian. I will recomment Ubuntu for new Linux users, but for experienced users as well.

Heh, like your post! :-)
I had the same feeling when I first booted Ubuntu (Hoary). Every other linux distro I've used until then wouldn't find that much hardware. Many (SuSe, Mandrake, Fedora) even wouldn't detect ANY hardware at all (well, no USB or ethernet, and that's pretty much it).
Therefor Ubuntu is the first Linux distro i kept using without switching back to windows. And I'm still loving it :-)

Well, thank you. I may be an ignorant fool when it comes to installing new stuff (I'll just pop the CD in and will read a manual only after something goes wrong, in which case I usually don't have a working net connection anyway), but I always try to search for the answers myself before asking anything.

Now that sounds like a great deal!

Just wanted to say congratulations to every person who made possible this proyect.Great job!!!

Howdy...great post which echos my experience with Ubuntu. I have a zero knowledge base, but wanted to try Ubuntu out...and it simply worked. That was last summer and I haven't gone back to Windows. I entered into my Ubuntu adventure expecting frustration and hassles - and to my utter shock it just worked. Couldn't have been happier.

It's funny you mentioned a sound card. When I was using Debian, I had huge troubles trying to make my sound card work. It took me quite a few mugs of coffee and kernel compiles before I got it working. In Ubuntu, I had no trouble at all.

I'll second this!

Hi Nana. Yes, Ubuntu is amazing and my OS of choice as well. That said, I do remember one OS that was simpler to install. It was called MS-DOS.

Of course, the install can't go equally smoothly for everyone. It depends so much on your hardware, and while Ubuntu was good at picking my hardware, some other distro might be better suited for your hardware. While I think Ubuntu is the best Linux distro, it may not be the best distro for everyone.
However, I love your attitude! I think it's very healthy to view the problems as a way to learn more about Linux. With that attitude, you'll go far!

Ah, good old MS-DOS. How could I ever have forgotten that? Yes, I'll admit it, it was easier to install. That's about the only thing that's better compared to Linux.
