Can you add an option between "it's okay" and "i love it".

I use like it and think it's better than ok, but in no way am I in love with it haha. I just find it a good stable OS when setup properly and on good hardware. Plus, I kind of have to use it for college.

Prior to answering this request or participating in the poll, I personally would like to know why you would ask or what the poll objective is?

I just want to see how many people can still live with windows

You do realise that, apart from a few of us that will answer honestly, this thread will turn into a Windows bashing rant. It will also probably be closed because of it.

Another from my (new) neck of the woods! :O :D

On topic, Windows is ok. Not terrible, not really good.

Windows (the OS) has its uses, as do windows (the GUI tool).

I recently thought I was going to have to say "goodbye" to XP, due to a run of the BSOD, but it turned out to be a memory card that needed to be reseated in its socket. (It could've been jarred loose or something of that nature when I moved the desktop it's in to a different room.)

Windows is an OK operating system, i've always used it up until 6 years or so ago when i start experimenting with linux (redhat 5 if my memory serves me correctly). Never used linux as my main OS though. THat changed with the coming of windows vista. Load of bloated crap that i definately did NOT want on my pc so i made the switch to linux as my primary OS with windows XP as dualboot for a couple of games (GTA vice city and san andreas refuse to work at decent speed in wine :( )

Happy linux user but not very much hate againt windows. Every OS has it weaknesses and linux aint perfect either but sure is better than windows :)

The larger percentage seem to think it's ok. Not surprisingly since in generaly it seems to be ok indeed. I had my share of trouble with Windows but I wasted a lot of time getting Linux to do it's job also.

Indeed. I must say I'm surprised that the usual anti Windows brigade hasn't come out in force (yet :)).

I find XP pretty good. I've never had much of a problem with it. Windows 2003 server also isn't that bad at all.

Other versions are another story...

I don't like the way it works and the philosophies behind it (do Microsoft guys have philosophies?).

We just can not do without windows. Right now, an organisation I am working for is spending on the order of USD 2.5 millions on new windows. Insulation against heat and noise is much better than with the old ones which have been used for some 30 years.

It works, that about it really. I use it to dual boot because of printing and office 07

Yes. If you read something one of them wrote, you will find evidence to show that:

Programmers are people, even if they work for Microsoft.
People are nice. Corporations are not. Microsoft is too big and should be chopped down, but their programmers are just doing their job.

Hate Microsoft. Not the employees.

The only thing I use Windows for anymore is as a guest OS when I tinker with virtual machines. I have to admit that if you know where to look, it's really not that difficult of a system to do complex things with.

Take static IP addresses for example: I have no clue how to set up a static IP address on Linux (it's probably not very difficult) but on Windows at least it's in a logical place- you select Properties when you right click the CONNECTION. Then you choose TCP/IP from the list of attributes, and look for the boxes where you type in an address. Simple. I had shared folders working in only a few minutes. But don't ask me to do it with Linux.

But I don't like it for hacking with. I like all the simple tools on my Linux system. I also like not having to pay for my hobbies.

Honestly though, I never got very far into Windows programming. I read a few tutorials, but that's as far as I learned the API- and that was a long time ago. I didn't learn anything from them except that it was hard to put windows on the screen.

On the other hand, I know where each and every file is on the Ubuntu filesystem, and can tell you the purpose of many of them. Try that with Windows, where hundreds of system files are dumped in Windows\system32. (Truthfully, Linux does this too with /usr/bin, but at least we don't use acronyms so excessively.)

Edit: Wait a minute, we do! Does anyone remember what /usr means? I used to think it was a reduced form of "user", for "user" tools, as opposed to core tools in /. But I think I heard that it meant "Unix System Resources", which doesn't make any more sense.

But /etc is even more confusing. Et cetera, perhaps? And "share" is certainly not "shared", since only root can write there.

Wow, 3 people that were stupid enough to vote "I'd rather die than use Windows".

All I can hope for is that they'll never have to actually make that choice...

It's funny that in the time between you posted this and now, one more person chose that option.

I like it, it was my first OS and I understand how most stuff works on it, at least on XP, Vista is far too bloated for my tastes.

I like Windows for when I am using my computer for jukebox purposes for parties. but other than that, Ubuntu is way faster for productivity apps like thunderbird and firefox. also my battery lasts way longer when running Ubuntu than Windows, which is great for a student like me who uses their laptop to take notes in class.

"Regression testing"? What's that? If it compiles, it is good, if it boots up it is perfect. (http://www.ussg.iu.edu/hypermail/linux/kernel/9804.1/0149.html)

According to Linus' logic, Windows is perfect, most of the time.

I think windows as a program is oke... I don't know about vista... but XP works fine for me... it does what I ask it to do...
Although I don't like the "closed source", "money first" thing about the company... but thats the vision of management, not the software or the employees...

It works, that about it really. I use it to dual boot because of printing and office 07

I don't know about your printing... but Ms office 2007 should not be a problem to run on wine (http://appdb.winehq.org/appview.php?iVersionId=4992) ...(haven't tried it myself though)
