sorry i wasn't sure where to put this post, but i would like to see a how-to forum/s because there really is a lot of needed sticky subjects. if you look at for example the general forums for about 1 month you will more than likely come across 501 posts on boot problems, which could be easily avoided with a nice how-to "deal with boot errors" and may restrict posts down to only 101 for the month. there are many other re-occuring problems, and while i am more than willing to do a few how-to's, my limited knowledge would require a lot of input from other users.

i guess starting more similar posts to: comprehensive multimedia guide can work, where every justs posts loads of extra little tid bits and the author adds them to the first post.

The problem is nobody reads Stickies! :)

but at least them regular trolls like me can direct people to resources rather than continually repeating the same comments in posts over and over

like directing people with nvidia driver problems to envy.... i know it's not hard an so far has worked for every i have recommended it to, but would be easier with a sticky explaining how to do the methods, terminal, via nvidia website, or via envy

Hi and yes not many read the stickies. If you find a thread that is worthy of a sticky then pm a mod of Admin and suggest it. :) Or use the report button.

Take a look here.

http://ubuntuforums.org/forumdisplay.php?f=100

Most users that have an issue tend not to care about other previous issues, Their problem is unique and only a thread dedicated to them will solve the issue.

The problem is not to have more stickies but to have less. Some clear concise ones about how to use the forums! If you know how to use the search you will not need to post most of the time.

That was my point. I thought I mentioned the fact that no one reads them, o well thanks for adding it.

I meant it by saying we need less.

I know what you mean.

A lot of threads in the absolute beginners forums have (easy) solutions.

I've written blog posts about them explaining how to fix these issues and I link to them in the forums.

It's easier and faster than writing the same (sometime long) thing every time.

I explain things as simply as humanly possible, so it's not like it hard to follow.

The problem is a lot of the time, they don't seem to read it.

They just keep asking question that were already answered in the link I provided.

Oh well.

@ rubin : the whole sticky issue gets revisited quite a bit, afterthis thread is long dead yet another will pop up :)

@bill : yeah people are people and the majority will continue doing exactly as they are doing now. As will the majority of the newcomers.

The whole problem with the stickies is only those that are inclined to research and solve their own problems will read them. having more or less of them doesn't change human nature and the behavior of our users.

The problem is that it's a lot less work creating a new thread as very likely you will get an answer soon. why should you even be inclined to do research on your own... searching 1h or 2h or more when you can just open a thread and 15min later you are very likely to be spoon-fed with the answer...
