[SOLVED] How to play .mid files?

Hi :)

I came across this yesterday - my Ubuntu (Hardy 8.04) will, for some reason, produce no sound at all when playing regular midi (.mid) files, such as mobile phone ringtones.

They open in "MoviePlayer" for some reason, and seem to play but, there's no sound whatsoever.

I tried a number of applications, including VLC, to play them but they either don't play at all or again generate no sound.

Is there a way to "fix" this, or do i need an extra application for midi files?

Appreciate any advice......

I tried using XMMS but it just didn't play midi files very well. The best player I found was Timidity Midi Player. It plays midi files with a richness I have not heard before, even in MS Windows.

Thank you very much for the reply. Is Timidity in the repos? I will give it a try as soon as i am back at home and in front of my Ubuntu box (now at work - Windoze).

Yes it is. Not the prettiest GUI in the world, but very functional.
