I'm pretty stuck with the xp (netware, bootloader, etc.) build that's on my work PC. I've been using knoppix a bit to do some stuff, and have other machines on my desk that I can install linux on - or at least remaster knoppix on! - but having more than one pc running is a bit old skool - so I'm using vmware player (or workstation when I can get hold of a copy) on the main pc - what's the best ubuntu image you've found if you've tried a few, or did you just build your own?

P.S. Mandriva 2009 is spot on, an ubuntu build that is as nice as that would be good, and preferably one with a ready to go vmware image file to download...

I always build my own. It's easy. Since you are using VMWare Player, you will have to go to EasyVMX (http://www.easyvmx.com/) to get the configuration, but after that it's just like installing it on a regular machine.

I switched to VirtualBox a while ago, so I no longer have to play with that EasyVMX stuff.

it would depend on what your system specs are. Windows will run on 256MB (minus other prosesses). I run on 512MB on my entire computer so i can't go over 192 MB for a VM system.

Xubuntu should be fine for systems who have 512MB, but it won't run the best.
