Hello
I'm one of two IT's in my school, teaching students of age 16 to 19. Different class profiles causes a lot of trouble... One class f.e. takes a year crash-course of computer gfx, both vector and bitmap, still and animated flash... the other class takes a crash-course of ms access and mysql db use, design and creation... And there is some more profiles... So as you can see, there's a lot of different software profiles to choose from, which should be easy for a teacher to switch between them and transparent for the students. It should be as easy as changing profiles in AD from micro$oft. Installation of additional software should be as easy as RIS on Windows Server, with automatic installation and menu changes during loading or user login...
Web access protection with squid/dansguardian should be easier to update/configure - taken down to the level of web based checkboxes and reloading of squid/dansguardian - multiple web access profiles for particular use - students usually waste precious time on community forums or youtube, sucking off bandwidth as well.

So, as you can see, server for a computer class should be some state-of-the-art configuration. Windows 2003 with RIS and multiple profiles loaded dynamically, with chosen apps in the menus does some of the task stated above... Is it possible to do that in ubuntu server? are there some preconfigured packages to create such a server? I use two of such servers in my school, but mainly for NAT/SQUID/DANSGUARDIAN/Simple SAMBA shares... I wish to create some real alternative for Windows 2003 Domain Controllers used in Polish schools...

cheers! :)

i m not sure about ubuntu but you can probably look at RedHat or SuSE's enterprise editions, they seems to have better support for these kind of enterprise network and admin managements tools

Yeah openSUSE enterprise edition has great support for networks like these, so I'm not sure.
