I'm running ubuntu from the Live CD and clicked the kubuntu demo to see what it looks like. To me it is a lot more attractive than ubuntu. Are there any functionality advantages to either? Which is more popular? It seems that unbuntu is just from the fact that it's the "name" of the distro and is the main topic here.
Does kubuntu get upgraded at the same times as the new ubuntu versions are offered, or is it totally seperate?

If you like the KDE interface go with Kubuntu if you like GNOME go with Ubuntu.

The option would always boil down to the users choice/preference of Desktop Interface. Use Ubuntu for GNOME and (k)Ubuntu for KDE.

It is all on preference, personally I prefer Ubuntu as I dislike KDE4 and KDE3 may not be around for much longer.
Sure in looks Kubuntu might be more appealing at first, but its just as easy to make regular ubuntu look good too.

Personally, I like the Nautilus file manager on the Gnome desktop for mounting network shares. Even though my favorite is the Gnome, I like both desktops installed on my machine, and right now I am using the Konqueror Browser on KDE4 to surf this forum.
It comes down to a matter of taste. In my opinion, they are both good.

Technically, Ubuntu has more users. . . But that is no reason to discount Kubuntu. Kubuntu is the Ubuntu base running KDE instead of GNOME. Most of the applications are different, but the repositories are the same. Ubuntu and Kubuntu follow the same release cycle.
It is really a matter of personal preference. Be sure to try both. Also remember that you can install one and then add the other later. You could then switch between the two. Just select a different session at the login screen. If you want more info on how to do this, post and we can help you set it up.
Hope this helps!

All in all Ubuntu is the most used as of right now, as stated above it's all about preference. New users usually prefer Ubuntu though.

Agreed, most people think of GNOME as the simpler environment.

I think Ubuntu (Gnome) looks better than KDE and is easier to theme than Kubuntu. Start out with Ubuntu, and then if you get bored with it, you can install KDE by typing sudo apt-get install kubuntu-desktopin the terminal.

well I personally started with KDE and found it fairly easy, but that was KDE3.

That sounds really simple. Wish I hadn't wasted my time downloading & burning a copy of kubuntu. Oh well, no big deal. :)

Go ahead and install it-- you can then install GNOME (which is what standard Ubuntu uses) and use both in your Kubuntu installation.
Actually, right now I use GNOME and Xfce (as in Xubuntu) on my desktop. I prefer GNOME but Xfce is a little more stable (games tend to crash under GNOME.)
