Was closing this thread an appropriate action?

I found nothing wrong or offensive in this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=901500). Should the moderator have closed this? or is there another more appropriate action that should have been taken?

The thread didn't start off to a very positive tone and we were uneasy about where it was headed down. Since the forum member in question is not allowed to participate in the discussions, it would've been a difficult and unjust situation if negative remarks were made at him while he is not here to say things on his behalf.

I think closing of the thread was an appropriate action. The question posed in the thread was answered by the final post and no further discussion was necessary.
