Ever since purchasing this laptop, the screen has been very dim (almost unusable). Using the function keys to adjust the brightness causes a notification thing to come on the screen with a bar representing the brightness, but the brightness does not change. I get similar results when using the brightness applet.

I tried going into the BIOS, and changing the brightness settings there, but they had no effect.

Any ideas? I have the problem even when booting off the live cd.

Sounds like your backlight has gone out. I'd say exercise your warranty to get a new backlight.

Maybe your hardware is broken, but other people have had probs with brightness adjustment in 8.04

have a look at this thread, it might help

Like you I have the same issue with my Inspiron 1501.

If you have Windows on the system as well, you may be able to increase the brightness in Windows and it may hold for Ubuntu. I know it works like that on my 1501. In my case there are no options in the BIOS.
