View Full Version : [ubuntu] GM965/X3100 Problems

Hey guys,

I'm currently running a Dell Inspiron 1525 Laptop with Ubuntu 8.04 upgraded from 7.10. Inside this machine comes the integrated Intel GM965 (a.k.a. X3100) graphics chip. Apparently, this card can support direct rendering and Compiz. Unfortunately, when I first installed Ubuntu with 7.10 back in March, the best drivers for this card weren't released in the repositories yet. I proceeded to complie from source on intel's linux dev site (http://www.intellinuxgraphics.org/) and, if memory served, managed to get Planet Penguin Racer and Tremulous up and running. Unfortunately, Nexuiz and wine were unable to run and error'd out and died (see http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/peripherals-hardware/122564-i915-driver-troubles.html).

Recently, I decided to revisit the issue and try to obtain full wine support so I can play my Half Life 2, WoW, and Return to Castle Wolfenstein (yes, this too errored out, even native Linux Enemy Territory) without having to reboot into XP. I got myself into trouble immediately. I couldn't even run PPRacer at 10+ FPS rates because I hadn't recompiled the source for the new kernel updates from Ubuntu. I decided to go with the repo versions so I wouldn't have to worry about this anymore.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be as easy as downloading xserver-xorg-video-intel and popping a few lines into my xorg.conf, because I can't seem to get direct rendering enabled and I still haven't gotten to try compiz. I also tried installing the stable version of the driver on intel's site, but I couldn't figure out how to compile drm and mesa because the Makefile complains about not having any targets. Has anyone gotten this card to work?

Plus I found some very odd results in my lspci...

alaric@alaric-laptop:~$ lspci | grep 00:02
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)
00:02.1 Display controller: Intel Corporation Mobile GM965/GL960 Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 0c)

Which results in me having to select two graphics drivers when I run displayconfig-gtk (I'll edit in a screenshot)

Hmm... While I was trying to get my screenshot of displayconfig-gtk, I realized that Ubuntu seems to be falling back to the vesa driver on one controller. Do I need to create two devices in my xorg.conf for each graphics controller?

Ok so no errors in the logs and the warnings are usual.

The fact that you see 2 cards is perfectly normal.
What is not, is that you have to configure 2 cards !

PS : I'll like to help you with displayconfig-gtk but it crash for me :D

And yes you shouldn't have deleted the failsafe configuration in your xorg.conf

Alaric
August 24th, 2008, 05:02 PM
I didn't delete it, I've got plenty of backups of my xorg.conf file. Also, isn't the default one easily regenerated via 'sudo X -configure'?

Is package libgl1-mesa-dri installed ? If not install it.

Yeah... it's installed, but I'll try reinstalling it with aptitude right now.

I tried some other things like getting a developers driver from intel.com and now I'm getting some errors due to my crappy attempt at installtion. I do seem to be getting quite a few less Register changed warnings now... Here's a more recent Xorg.0.log.

Ok let's start again :(

First I don't understant why you have so many modules in your xorg.conf
In mine there is only three : glx GLcore and v4l

I don't know how you reconfigure your xorg so try using this command :

sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Look if the modules are still there, then go back to gdm and KILL the Xserver using ctrl+AltGr+Backspace.

Alaric
August 24th, 2008, 06:23 PM
Those are modules that were installed by various attempts at solving this problem... They're mostly from IEGD which I mentioned attempting to install above.

I made a mistake it's ctrl+alt+backspace to shutdown the xserver (did you do that ?)
If it's done, look at the results (if it's the same) and copy the errors of the logs :

cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep EE

PS : to be sure, check xserver-xgl package, it should NOT be installed.

Alaric
August 24th, 2008, 06:55 PM
Actually I just used killall gdm and /etc/init.d/gdm start. I haven't noticed any changes, direct rendering is still off, and there are no errors in the Xorg log.

Stemp
August 24th, 2008, 07:12 PM
I know about gdm stop, restart. But I'm not confident about it :D
With ctrl+alt+backspace I am sure the xserver was restarted.

So xserver-xgl is not installed ? right ? ok.

Because I'm lost, I googled everywhere and I didn't find any problems like this with this card :(

It should be straight forward, no problems /o\

sudo aptitude reinstall xserver-xorg-video-intel

To go back to the normal drivers.

Then reboot, maybe it will clean all the modules unneeded.

I had the same exact problem. During the upgrade, if you don't select to keep all the old config files, if will mess the graphics up. . . to get all the correct apps back just do:

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-desktop

if that doesnt work after rebooting, just sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop

this will install all the neccisary kernel modules that got removed!please exuse my bad spelling. good luck. ;)

Hmm... I'm not sure what did it, but I reinstalled xserver-xorg-video-intel (for about the 7th time) and deleted a bunch of stuff from /usr/lib (anything matching libGL*, lib*drm*, lib*dri*). This forced glxgears, glxinfo, and ppracer to crash my X when run, lol. So, I reinstalled all of the packages that I had just broken with 'aptitude reinstall' and then restarted. Now PPRacer runs at about 60 fps, and glx gears gives me nearly 800 fps. However, whenever I run glxgears, or ppracer from the command line I get:

libGL error: open DRM failed (Operation not permitted)
libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering
4278 frames in 5.0 seconds = 854.626 FPS
4280 frames in 5.0 seconds = 854.362 FPS

Perhaps it's lying to me? lol

Which is odd, because I believe just after I restarted I was getting 'direct rendering: yes'. What's wrong now?

From http://dri.freedesktop.org/wiki/DriTroubleshooting

If you get:

libGL error: failed to open DRM: Operation not permitted
libGL error: reverting to (slow) indirect rendering

then you are trying to run as a user that doesn't have permission to use the DRI (root is the default allowed user). To let all users access the DRI, add the following section to your xorg.conf:

Section "DRI"
Mode 0666
EndSection
