I've tried recordmydesktop, istanbul, and xvidcap and none of them work as expected...

recordmydesktop: Seems to work without audio-capturing, crashes with it enabled. Can't play back video in MPlayer or Xine, plays in ffplay but with wrong colors.
Istanbul: Random screen flashes and characters in output video; unwatchable/unusable for practical purposes.
xvidcap: Just crashes

Compiling recordmydesktop from the latest source gets a usable version apparently. Pretty sad that the package in hardy is broken.

Now i just need to look for some demuxing software that supports Ogg Theora/Vorbis...

Your issue must be specific to your system, because it works for me.
