Does anyone know if Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 or (better) 2008 is compatible with Wine?
Thanks
(sorry if there is a similar thread)

not sure on that particular issue, but if all you need is an IDE that can open and save to the visual studio formats, try Code::Blocks (codeblocks.org if i remember correctly) i use this for my computer science classes at the University instead of Visual Studio and not a single professor has said anything to me.
and if thats not preferable, you could always run VirtualBox with an XP install just for that kind of thing. a friend of mine does this for both Visual Studio and Maya 3D. hope that gives you some options if it doesn't work (i've never tried it, but i don't know any reason it wouldn't, but i'm a newb :D)

I don't know, but with the amount of libraries and files needed to run Visual Studio, I'd be scared that Wine would display a giant frowny-face on the screen and say, "No, thank you!". Code::Blocks is a decent piece of software, as is MonoDevelop if you're into that kind of thing. There's always vi(m)/emacs.

I don't think it is.
Check the Wine AppDB (http://appdb.winehq.org) if you like, though I'm sure it'll tell you the same.
Visual Studio has a massive amount of libraries etc. that it needs to install, I don't think Microsoft would make it easy to run it in Wine either...

OH, YEA! i forgot about Mono! good catch! i don't use much of the .NET functionality of Visual Studio (mostly just a C++ guy) so it totally slipped my mind that that may be a consideration.

If it doesn't work, there's always virtualbox!

I believe that Visual Studio is written (at least partially) in .NET, so I highly doubt Wine will run it.
I've read that MonoDevelop supports C++ and uses CTAGS to do "intelisense" which is pretty cool.
If MonoDevelop doesn't work out for you, you could always try KDevelop which is supposed to be pretty good and seeing as how KDE is in C++, I'm sure they must focus on C++ support.
Hope that helps

@eternalSage: Maya3d has a native linux version. I've used maya7 for linux for a while and I just won maya2009 at siggraph2008 and will install it on my ubuntu machine. Native 64bit version.
Off topic but I thought I'd just put that out there.
