I just found an application on the iTunes store called Datacase. It allows you to run an ftp server on your iPhone and upload/view files. It cost $6.99 and seems great. I can view the files via firefox but can't upload to it until they add 3rd party FTP client support. However, the sites FAQ says that may be added later this week.
Anyway, if anyone is able to upload to it, please share.
Here's the site URL: http://www.veiosoft.com/

I had the same problems but I installed Konqueror and guess what .... It works! Just enter the FTP address in the address bar in Konqueror.
Enjoy!

DataCase has been updated to 1.1 and Ubuntu will now connect to it via gFTP. With this you can upload and listen to music on your iPhone. However, as of right now it seems you need to select each song you want to play and it will NOT switch to the next song on the list automatically. On the other hand, it still works well with long tracks like podcasts.
