I have an OLD laptop here that I'm trying to install (k)ubuntu on. When the installer gets to the point of mounting the CD drive it asks for a floppy with drivers. I don't have a floppy or any other drivers - bought this second-hand (for $20) and it didn't come with any drivers. FWIW, Windows XP fails in a very similar way, asking for a file off of the CD. I tried Knoppix and Damn Small Linux, neither of those will boot - I get an error about "failed to create Knoppix file system."

I've googled for drivers but I can't find any Linux drivers. I'd much rather Linux than XP, but right now I would settle for whatever gets it to run.

Any idea where I can find those drivers? Is there another model number that I should search for?

not sure i understand - the live cd boots off the cdrom ok, runs kde ok, and when you install to hard drive, it says it can't see the same cdrom it's been running off of?

Yes. It doesn't make sense to me either.
