Powerful Calculator?

haha... Hello everybody! I have been looking for a while now, but I haven't really been able to find what I'm looking for. I'm looking for a calculator that can do very large calculations. All of the calculators that I have used for linux, including command line ones get to where it goes past about 10 to the 20th it just shows a bunch of letters!

I'm wondering if there are any calculators that you know of out there that can handle large numbers. Thanks! :p

Man, have you tried bc from the command line? I just calculated PI to 25,000 places and it showed all 25,000 places (click HERE (http://www.geekronomicon.com/?q=node/79) to read about it and try the shell script I wrote to time your result).

The two command line calculators 'dc' and (as ivanjs already wrote) 'bc' are arbitrary precision calculators and should work fine. Never tested them with such big numbers though.

I use wcalc. You can set the precision with \p. It seems like it doesn't do much beyond \p 1024.

what are you gonna do with 20 decimals apart from going "whhoooaaa" ???
not trying to be "smart" but a bit more detail on what ond why your trying to produce these numbers might be of help.

I know I'm late to the party but I have a suggestion.

VTI (Virtual TI) works well using wine. Although it's been giving me trouble when I try to launch it from the command line it works perfectly when you just doubleclick the EXE. You can get the OS file for VTI directly from Texas Instruments at http://education.ti.com and you get the emulator at http://www.ticalc.org

This emulator will not do TI-89 Titanium or the V200. I usually use it with the TI-89 OS but it will run TI-83, I BELIEVE it will run TI-83+ as well, but probably not the TI-84.

If nothing else works, and especially if you are familiar and comfortable with TIs, this would be an excellent bet.

That being said I'm not even using it because I can't figure out how to make the dang number keys on the keyboard control the input (gotta click on all the buttons to do any math) and it keeps giving me **** when I try to launch it fromt he command line (so I can't make any shortcuts or aliases to launch it)

Emulating a ti 89 would be cool, but I think you need a rom-dump, not just the operating system from TI. I think the only way to legally do that is if you have that model ti calculator?

If you want to do advanced math like the ti-89+, wxmaxima and maxima and k3dsurf are good open source programs for that.

A while ago, I was looking for MATLAB codes that can distinguish numbers that are 20 decimal places apart because I needed to do a bunch of the following operations:
(1-x)^N, where x is really close to zero, and N is a large number.

Anyway, MATLAB is capable of arbitrary precision arithmetic, but it's so slow I approximated those results with exp(-x*N) instead, but that's one reason to need high precision.

+1 for python shell with the aforementioned aliases. Or better yet, use ipython (http://ipython.scipy.org/moin/) since it has introspection and other fun things that help you out when using some of the fancier math libraries. I use both, and like them a lot.

Well, it depends on what classes you take in college. For the most part, the TI-84 Plus SE is a good choice for general math classes, even in college. But if you plan on majoring in either Math, Physics, or Engineering, you may need a CAS-level calculator like the TI-89 for the more rigorous coursework.
