View Full Version : [ubuntu] USB Devices and rebooting

Hey all,
This is my first post here. I've been browsing the forum for about the past month or so as I'm a new user to Ubuntu. So far I've been impressed with the support offered for nearly every issue. However, this was something that I was unable to find an answer to. Sometimes when I plug in a USB device such as an external hdd or my wireless mouse, I need to reboot my computer totally for it to be recognized. I need to shutdown -h and then start it back up again and then the usb device will be recognized. I'm wondering if there is any sort of fix for this minor inconvenience. I would imagine its probably just a setting I need to change but I'm not exactly sure. Thank you in advance for your help.

(terminal) To see more info on the usb-

Command to list USB devices: lsusb -v
sudo sh -c "echo 0 > /sys/module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend"
dmesg | grep usb

Try updating usb ids-

sudo update-usbids

josh@josh-laptop:~$ sudo lsusb -v

also, if I have the devices connected on initial boot, I can unplug it and plug it back in and ubuntu will recognize it everytime, unless I reboot without having it plugged in, which I often do for my external hard drive, or a usb flash drive or something of that sort.

I had the same problem lately, specifically regarding external drives. You can give the solution in the linked post below a try. Be warned that it will cause USB to work at 12mbps as compared to 480mbps. At least they'll work, though, until the ehci_hcd module is fixed.

(terminal) To see more info on the usb-

Command to list USB devices: lsusb -v
sudo sh -c "echo 0 > /sys/module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend"
dmesg | grep usb

Try updating usb ids-

sudo update-usbids

for me to stop USB Suspend it was:

echo -1 >/sys/module/usbcore/parameters/autosuspend

after reboot it worked at full USB 2 speed

perhaps You can try this way before you plug usb stuff

sudo modprobe -r --force ehci_hcd
