I'm looking to buy a Dell inspiration 1525 a wanted to get a little more Ram on it; I'm thinking about two gigs, but don't want to waste the money if it is not seen by the OS

Two gigs should do nice, would allow you some good compensation for a virtual machine running also :)

Good idea about the virtual machine. Are there any official documents that I could use to double check before I head to the check out line?

using a virtual machine has no effect on whether the RAM will be seen by the OS. If you have ubuntu 32 bit you will be able to use up to 3.2 GB of RAM. If you want more than that you can simply use the 64 bit version of ubuntu and you will have no problems with RAM addressing.

i have 2gb ram and it is recognised fine by ubuntu, also it is much cheaper to upgrade ram yourself after you buy the laptop. i buy mine from crucial http://crucial.com, it was about £34 for 2gb of ram (cheaper if bought together, i bought separately) which is a lot cheaper than the dell upgrades. it is also very easy to install

To clarify I meant that 2 GB RAM would allow you to run a virtual machine and leave you plenty left over for ubuntu to function.

I understand, That will come in handy for running live CD's too. Every once and a while I have to support windows boxes, but I refuse to share a hard drive with gates. LOL

2 GB RAM is fine. I have that on my new laptop with a dual boot system, with Vista an Ubuntu runs faster than Vista.

The point I was looking to make is that more RAM will allow me to get better performance from live CD as it's content is load into the Temp storage, Ether way I know 8.4 is going to fly

no amount of RAM will make the liveCD run quicker. The reason why is because RAM is not the limiting factor. The limiting factor is actually the speed at which you can read from the CD drive.

Good point I forgot about that factor. I'm new to the board so I don't know to much about marking post resolved or other wise

You can set how much memory for your virtual OS to use in the virtual machine. With 2 gigs of ram you can easily set it up to 1 gig for the virtual machine and ubuntu would hardly notice. Then again you would unlikely want to use that much for most purposes but you can do it if the need arises.
