Is there a way to upconvert an .avi? I have a bunch of 700mb rips that'd I'd like to be better quality.

Sorry, but no. Once the video has been compressed using a lossy compression there is no way getting back the details lost in the compression.

Ypou can scale the video to higher resolution, or re-compress it witha higheer bitrate,but you'd only get same quality video with higher filesize.
