If all you want to do is capture a still shot from your cam, see if your scanner application recognizes it. For example Xsane recognizes my laptops camera.

look for "cheese" (no quotes) in synaptic or the add/remove... app

It has an OSX-like interface with some cool effect.
You can also capture video as well.

its unfortunate that things like "cheese" don't come up when I
[code]aptitude search webcam[\code]

I looked at your sugestion (with aptitude show) and was slightly embarassed with my own suggestion. It looks like just what the doctor ordered. :)

I see that my Cheese captures video - can you tell me how to get the sound with the video, because i can't seem to do that!

honestly, i dunno. I'll look into that for you.

EDIT 1: Well, it seems like i cant get audio on there either. There are some possibilities:
1. My mic isint set up right
2. The version on Cheese in the Ubuntu repos might not support sound yet.
3. the world spontaneously combusted
I'll try to get answers, but it woul be be best if the OP would mark this thread as solved, or if some other peeps out there can suggest something better. It's strongly suggested a new thread be started about fixing these problems.

But for the most part, it does capture images, and thats what the OP wanted...i think
