Yesterday, i made my first ubuntu install!
I must say that i'm pleased to see how good it works. Certain it takes some times to get everything like you want, but ok.

Now the gaming part is what i don't understand.
I have only 1 game for the moment that i'm playing and that is Black & White 2.
I read things about wine and cedega, cedega is for me no go. I'm not a die hard gamer and if i spend $5 every month that would make it very expensive to me. (game 50 euros + 12 months of cedega = too much for 1 game).

Can someone help me running this game pls?

You can try it with regular wine, though i don't know if it will work. Look here though http://www.linux-gamers.net/modules/news/article.php?storyid=793 dx9wine, seems to be integrated with winecvs now, but try that

hhmmm... i must say i don't know if this will work since i only play native games (or win32 games for which there's a linux installer).

Perhaps you should considering dual booting. Then only use win as a game platform.

doh. what a strange advice.
for Windows only games it might be the best solution.

For one thing a lot of Win-games aren't natively supported under Linux.. and you said yourself that Cedega is a no-go for you. which by the way it doesn't support all games, because it is hard decyphering closed source, closed formats.

i know you're right, but i feel so uncomfortable when i read "use winslows" on a linux board.
advices like "hey linux is such a good choice... but if something doesn't work, use winslows" sound like "you should buy a copy of redmond's leading software even if you don't want it ; let me explain you why it is stupid to choose linux, since you still have to run winslows and so learn 2 operating systems" for newbies.

just my opinion. hey, i'm not a GNU integrist or so, understand me well plz :) (well i hope my english is good enough for u to understand want i mean ;))

btw klemens, u can automate the use of cedega 4.4.x in gnome (no cmd line). right-clic on *.exe and choose 'run with...', then select cedega.
next time you right-clic an exe, you should see 'open with cedega' in context menu.
hope this helps.

you should also consider contacting the game company and explain them that you can't (or had difficulties to) enjoy the game you bought since they do not provide a linux version/installer : costs 10 minutes of your time and may help to change their mind.

if you let us know, other people may ask too.
i've created a topic for that purpose here (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=89553).

Nothing strange for that solutions. Many newbies do that so they still can play their favored game.

Not all of us are über linux extremist, though I won't use windows ever more. But he said Cedega was a no go and for my concern is to give the best solution out of the circumstances which are best for him.

v4.4.3-1 doesn't require monthly fee, but it's command line only.
to dl it, ask Mr Google, or torrentreactor.

I seriously hope that you were suggesting the free CVS version of Cedega (which does not include many of the copy protect enhancements included in Cedega) and not a warez copy that is illegal.

of course! i do not want to use warez and stuff like that, sorry if i wrongly explained myself and let you think this.

edit:
old post modified to avoid continuing this useless discussion.
to fully explain the thing, i was giving an info i found while surfing. once more i do not use cedega so i don't know it well, and what i read made me think that only point2play was $$ (sorry can't find the word) and cedega could be used freely for registered members. to your reactions, seems that this was a mistake. so i'm sorry. turn the troll mode off.

just to be sure we are on the same page here...
Cedega has always had a monthly fee for the full product including the copy-protection schemes so that copy-protected games could also be installed.
But they also provided a version of it for free from their CVS, which only lacked this copy-protection scheme, for obvious reasons. Transgaming needs to get funded somehow. :)

As someone explained in another forum regarding this issue - do not use e-mail to contact the company with this issue, as they'll prolly hit delete faster than you can say "linux?".
Write a real paper letter and use the snail mail - this way they have to take it into consideration as someone obviously spent more than 5 mins writing them about this issue.
An ordinary letter will have more "weight" in more than the obvious sense ;)
