For how complex an application VMware is I would not even think of trying to run it with wine, you can grab a copy of the 6.5 Beta if you register with them it also has 3D acceleration rather fun playing portal in directx 8.1 mode from within the virtual machine directx 9 is still not fully implemented in it right now.

You could always try virtual box or if your virtual machine is already setup download VMware player for linux and use that to run the virtual machine if you must stick with VMware.

I'm a bit confused - VMware have generally supported Linux pretty well - I've had Server and Player working perfectly happily in Ubuntu Hardy (and in RHEL4), and Player, at least, is free. Is there a particular reason why you need VMware Workstation, and can't just acquire a linux release of it and a license?
