Hi! I am back with another question. Do USB modems work for dial-up on a G4 iMac (round base) running Ubuntu 8.04? I heard that the built-in modem on the G4 (round base, flat LCD) is not a "hardware" modem.
Any advice greatly, greatly appreciated!

USB modems are generally not hardware modems too.
the most reliable solution is to get a serial modem (try ebay or freecycle), and use it with a usb-to-serial converter.

Thanks ssam!
The only problem with that is that this computer has no serial port - 3 USB, 2 firefire, headphone jack, lan, and telephone (modem). I have seen modems that can be used with both USB and serial (i.e. both kinds of connections) - wonder if that would work?
