Is there one? If not, what's the most popular or most common one? I used to use TeXnic center in Windows, but now Add/Remove and Synaptic are giving me loads of TeX programs to choose from and I'm lost. So can anyone tell me what is/are the most recommended program/s? And where to get it (Add/remove or Synaptic)? Thanks.

IMO there is no "Best", everyone has different requirement and different taste.

I think Kile (kde integrated latex environment) is a generally good one for latex. however, your mind may vary.

I'm not sure what the real question was, but just going back to basics, then install the "*texlive*" options rather than tetex. This will pull in almost all the options you can think of.

For editing there are many threads on this. kile is very popular. gedit has a LateX plugin which also works very well.
