Hello all! I used GameMaker 6.1 on Windows XP, and I frankly hate using Wine to use that...and I wanted to change anyway. Any ideas on a good game program for Ubuntu 8.04?

You could try blender. ( blender.org ) (site is down right now)
Somewhat complicated though.

And what does blender have to do with game making? I don't know such tools, because personally I don't see a point in their existence, but maybe there are games with extensive scripting support that can be turned into almost anything you want.

I'd say try learning python.

I think I'd recommend you learning some programming language too if you really want to make anything interesting. Python or Ruby are easy and powerful from beginning, so if you would like to give it a shot, then I'd recommend one of them=)

It has both an integrated game engine and export options for external ones, such as Crystal Space.

Oh, I didn't know. Anyway blender is professional 3D graphics tool and from what I know GameMaker is simple 2D game making engine - it is probably much harder to make a game in blender.

Here's a demo of a game running in Blender's game engine:

You'd first have to probably learn Python and practice with Blender then after that just practice.

An easier combination might be Python + PyGame.

I also suggest you use PyGame. There is a lot of help available for Python and PyGame. Also, Blender uses Python for its game engine, so I suggest Blender for 3D projects. Other than those, I can only suggest Construct (www.scirra.com), which is currently only for Windows, but it's definitely better than Game Maker. Construct (optionally) uses Python, and it is even easier to use than Game Maker. Also, it's completely free and under the GPL license.
Good luck making games for Linux. Bye. -FJ

In my signature there is a link to an mmorpg. They told me what game engine was used to make it but I can't remember. If you want to check out the forums they told me I could find it in there.

http://www.winsite.com/bin/Info?20500000036527 (source code included) - although it's text based and aimed at the MS-DOS platform, it might be of interest to someone

There's Game Editor (http://game-editor.com/), though it's not free and I've never tried it. You should also hit Happy Penguin (http://www.happypenguin.org/) and check out the game-related utility category. There might be something there that strikes your fancy.
