View Full Version : [ubuntu] [SOLVED] Alternative to uTorrent?
August 12th, 2008, 11:18 PM
Recently taking the plunge to linux and ubuntu i have realized that there are many applications that run as well or better than their microsoft/third party variations.
However, i was very fond of the P2P client utorrent on xp. Its lightweight, fast and has enough features for me. I have heard of deluge, bittorent, azureus and transmission however having used azureus and bittorent on xp find it too bloated and heavy.
It would be helpful if you could recommend an alternative or personal experience of your favourite clients. Thanks in advance

I find Ktorrent very easy to use it can be downloaded with synaptic.
Hope that helps,
try it if you don't like it remove it.

i completely agree azureus is way too bloated for me
if you havent already, you should definatly try either transmission or deluge or bittornado
none of those clients are half as bloated as azeurus and they all perform very well in my experience
it shouldn't make much difference which client you are using, the speeds should be about the same (as long as you have the proper ports open)

So far, i don't know of any good P2P programs. Currently i'm running uTorrent on XP, it is litturly a BitTorrent clone with Icons to match.
One torrent program I would strongly not recommend is BitComet!! [-X

I found that transmission works really well

I too use uTorrent in xp and i love transmission. It has less visual focuas and generally downloads faster. So Transmission i suggest

Transmission is ok really easy to use. Ktorrent = the best IMO its alomost exactly like Utorrent if not exactly. Google an image of ktorrent and you will see what i am saying
To each their own tho

Deluge is a nice alternative. It's in the repo as deluge-torrent.

Thanks everyone for the contributions. Had a look at Transmission, Deluge and KTorrent all look great. Ill have a look at others but much bigger choice of clients than i thought. I find more and more with Ubuntu anything i could do on XP I can do as good or better with Ubuntu.
Again thanks for the great replies. Great introduction to the Ubuntu forums :):):):):)

utorrent works great in Wine...transmission is buggy..but deluge is probably your best option. I use utorrent in wine and it works wonderfully

I would also vote for Deluge - decent GUI, does what it says on the tin
