I have searched this forum for an answer, and it seems that other users have had similar problems as well.
The thing is, when I try to open Olympus .orf raw files in any program in Ubuntu, all I get is colourful stripes and a lot of noise.
I have installed dcraw but that didn't help much either.
Could anyone please explain to me how to solve this problem.

when you say you installed dcraw, did you install the plugin also for digikam or gimp? have you tried ufraw plugin in gimp? how about rawtherapee or rawstudio? if those don't work, post a small .orf file somewhere so i can try to open it - i have just about every open source linux photo tool available installed on my machine.

also, if you haven't used digikam, give it a try, it's great - install digikam and kipi-plugins for it.

It can't install digikam because some of the files seem to be missing from the repository.
Here is an example orf but because I can't open it anywhere I wasn't able to make it any smaller (it's about 10 meg)

By the way, bibble lite opens the files just fine, however it is not free and I don't really understand the interface very well.
