Hey all
Just wanted to see what other people think about microsoft scrapping future windows OS's and starting again with 'Midori'. Obviously it wont bother us too much but what kind of effect will it have on microsoft? And what could we expect to see from the OS?
After the hardly successful vista its not surprising MS are trying something different. But I dont see how they can create something much different without creating loads of compatability issues, issues which businesses will not want to have to spend money solving. Likewise any radical changes to the OS would also have businesses spending money making sure employess could use the OS properly - noone will buy it!
It sounds like it will be disappointingly similar to windows or will just be a large money loss for MS, if people just want something different they use linux or mac at the mo.
As far as looks are concerned I reckon they might try to go a bit mac-ish, although i dont own a vista computer myself i live with people who do and it certainly feels like they were trying to go that way with that venture.
Im just throwing some ideas around here, if anyone actually knows much about it - cool!

Someone like Steve Jobs would have the guts, Steve Ballmer on the other hand won't.

If they can get the OS down to just a core OS, with no crapware on top. Allow user(s) to pick their own web browser and media center from say the OS installation disk or as soon as install complete, d/l from website than I can see it happening. One caveat, the OS will need to have a price tag of no more than $199USD...

They better get a Windows compatibility layer running to keep compatibility with older apps and drivers.
Otherwise they're ****** :)
Also, the WINE devs will be ripping their hair out.

Noope, won't happen.
An entirely new operating system with entirely new interface and entirely new drivers needing to be written? Windows users won't stand for it. Windows 7 will be another PR failure for Microsoft, and I think this time they'll get the message: Windows users want Windows XP.

Its true! perhaps rather than try and do something that looks new they should focus on doing something theyve never done before - make a reliable, tough operating system --> some kind of XP+ (now without tantrums)

Plain and simple. I don't care anything about it.
If it's released under the GPL as an open source product, I'll take a look at it, until that happens, forget it.
The could easily make a lot of money selling professional level support to companies with an open source operating system under the GPL.

I don't think it will happen in the near future. there's too much backward compatibility that would need to be taken care of + the entire software ecosystem built around XP and Vista. MS can't afford to star over from 0 because of the money lost in the process

I bet if it ever gets released it won't be before the end of 2015, by which time everyone who wants Windows will be using ReactOS 2.0 including OEMs.

I think its likely that people buying home computers would prob. move to a new MS OS regardless of what its called, from what I saw with people moving to vista and not having any idea what itll be like. Its kind of the comfort brand that a lot of people know and would likely follow.

Windows users want Windows XP.
Very true, but considering that Microsoft spent several years and billions of dollars (I heard it was around 5-6 billion) on making Vista, I don't see them regressing so soon. Then again, a bare-bones XP variant (something like those "TinyXP" copies that make the rounds on some of the dodgier corners of the internet) could sell very well as a professional product.

It might be possible though. They could build a new OS from scratch and providing backward compatibility with some sort of WINE-like application. Which would be easier to build for them of course.
