Its very easy most of th time, once you have a theme downloaded right click on your desktop and select "change desktop background"
go to the "theme" tab and click the "install" button and make your way to where you put your theme.
But some themes you will encounter might have to be compiled if they are a engine.

The way mentioned above will work. I like to extract it and move it to /home/your_user_name/.themes

If the theme doesn't appear to be working, you probably don't have the theme engine.

well what theme are you getting now?
if its that vista theme it will work by default.
No worries about engine unless the author says it needs an engine.

Well, first let's find out if you have it, because I don't know if you've installed it correctly yet. When you right click on your desktop, go to "change desktop background", and then themes, do you see the Aero theme listed at all, or does it just not look right?

If it looks all gray and ugly, you need the theme engine. Check the page on gnome-look.org that you downloaded it from. The engine you need might be listed there.

If you don't see it at all, it's not properly installed.
