Hi all!

I am a student who just graduated from high school so forgive me if i am being too arrogant or something like that.

I ve seen thousands of themes and mockups for ubuntu (window themes, login screens, bootups) and most of them arent what i expect to be user friendly or for general use. So here is my variant of login screen for ubuntu.

For now its just a mock up but i am trying to implement it as we speak.

Also i have one important question. Why does ubuntu community is trying to change a theme for every release it makes? I think we should make one great theme and stick to it like mac and win does. But we need to make it great! I m not trying to teach anyone, just a thought =)

So here are the mockups for login screen: http://cppforlife.deviantart.com/art/Ubuntu-mockup-login-screen-94312620

I dont really know how to use deviantart web site (pretty bad IMHO) so just follow the link in a description to see next step.

Almost forgot I posted concept art on wiki page for a bootup screen but no one replies. Is wiki dead or something or my work is that bad?

My concepts are in dmitriy's section (almost at the bottom of the page):

Thank you, dmitriy

Btw I am noob in linux world, so dont expect me to know everything.

thank you. I m creating the actual theme now but unfortunetly there is no way to replicate two input boxes (gdm isnt flexible enough) separately so i will change it to use only one input. Also how come i cannot assign my own string for different actions such as instead of default label "Password:" I want to have "password" =(

Also another question: where can i look up list of available default fonts on ubuntu so i know which ones i can use in gdm theme?

thanks again

I m back with the actual gdm theme based on my posted mock up. I changed some aspects of the design so it would be possible to implement it.

Download here: http://www.box.net/shared/x7oyxohbyz

Optional: if you want to make your experience smoother in general when logging in you can change background in System>Admin>Login window>Local>Background to bg color of your login screen. In this case it is #150500.

What do you think?

Great work! Have you seen this mockup by WillWill:

Hopefully the GDM will be replaced with the "facebrowser" in Ubuntu 8.10

@MadsRH: thx. I ve seen willwill's mockup but didnt quite like it. In my opinion logging in shouldnt be put in a window. It should represent the whole desktop... and then i dont like some details such as paddings for options menu and other stuff.

I just looked at the facebrowser newest design and its amazing.(http://people.ubuntu.com/~mmueller/login-experience-mockup.ogg) I need some animation in my theme too! (It was in my orig idea but then i realized i couldnt do it =( )

Btw i noticed you were active in proposal of new bootup screen. Any comments on my idea?

https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Artwork/Incoming/Intrepid/Newsplash?action=AttachFile&do=get&target=logofillup.gif

logo is gray at the beginning and then it fills up with colors to indicate the process.

Also if you look at the gdm theme i made and bootup screen you can notice the same icon, so it could be put in the exact same place in bootup and login making the process of turning on more streamligned and asthetic.

thx again for comments,
dmitriy

P.s.: any way to make gdm fade in on its start?

log in screen is verry dark(check your monitor calibration), besides that it looks good.
