I am pretty much completely new to Ubuntu. I installed it on my desktop as a dual boot just to see what it was like, and now I am hooked.

Anyway... to cut to the chase...

I am trying to wipe Windows XP and install Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy on my Dell Inspiron 5150 laptop, but something isn't working out here. It will go into the program a ways and then hang on a black screen. Sometimes the black screen has a white X in the middle that I can move with my mouse. Sometimes it is there but I can't move it. Sometimes I get little red and green strips of color across the top 1" of my monitor. Still, other times I see nothing at all. I've been trying to figure this out for the past couple of days off and on. After searching and reading through anything and everything on google, I suspect it is the graphics card causing this. The problem is I haven't seen an answer for how to correct this issue when Ubuntu isn't actually installed yet. Every answer I find assumes it has already been installed.

How do I get around this? How can I correct this problem so I can get Ubuntu to install?

Thanks in advance.
