Hello all,

I'm getting ready to embark on trying to get Vulture's Claw running. Man do I love nethack and its variants. Does anyone have any words of advice for getting this running? Like: "here's a .deb"?:)

I've been looking for one for vultures eye too but had no luck :(. I downloaded the source and looked at the docs in it, when they started saying "change all these bits in the makefiles" I gave up.

LOL ...I'm not too adverse to working with the makefiles, but this one seems especially annoying however. I actually went through the process and didn't manage to get it working. I *really* like the gtk slashem', though, and its in the repositories.

I tried to get this working a few times too, but it never worked. I installed Falcons Eye through synaptic and that just goes blank after creating a character.

Yeah, mine does too...I think I remember reading that the version included in the repositories is broken. I'm tellin ya' slashem-gtk (with the 3d tiles turned one) is the way to go!

Its just

$slashem-gtk

in a terminal window. Don't forget to go into the options pane and select the "3d" tiles.

Great ty ... dumb question but does this then invoke slashem as a nethack game? or...? b/c part of the purpose of getting it was to play nethack i think or whatever it comes with i guess... sorry i sound like an idiot but i'm on 8 hrs sleep in 2 days. hehe

found another thread about this & they said you have to disable the mp3 & sometimes all sound and midi files in an options text file (not sure this was on windows or linux tho).

Slashem is a Nethack derivative, so I don't think it actually starts Nethack. When you start the program, its in old skool ascii mode (which I like and play often) but you can get the very cool 3d tile version (a la Vulture's Claw etc) by selecting game>option and then "misc" on the next pane. Pick "3d tiles" and you're set. I can't find any way of making this a default setting.

Have fun! I spent a good 2 hours playing yesterday at work :-) I awlays tell people that it is seriously the most complex and involving computer game I've played!

Is Nethack a relative of the old games "Hack" & it's relative "Larn", ported from Unix to the Amiga, by "the software distillery" in the 80's?

It sounds like it could be by the ascii description above. That games certainly a survivor.

Cheers,

Oh you bet it is! And its a survivor cause its the greatest game in the world! :-)

Google 'roguelike' and find the 8 zillion splinters of the original hack. I really like slashem which is basically nethack with expanded magic rules and classes.

Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay too much work need to compile for my liking. Aliening (is that even a word?) an RPM did the trick though :)
