The Inquirer has an interesting piece about a new Sony Patent on a technology that may possible prevent DVD disc media users from using their purchased disks in other machines after they have used them on a specific reader. Commentary also available on Joystiq. From the Article: 'While many are aware of the double profit companies make on pre-owned games, this would ensure the death of trading games between friends and even going to a friend's house to play a little multiplayer."

More Digital Rights Management crap from Sony. This scares me, it really does.

This doesn't scare me really. Anything as restrictive as what is written in that article would never take off... people just wouldn't buy it. At least I know I wouldn't, and I have faith in the rest of society to do the same.

Actually... I also have faith that corporations are smart enough to not try something that restrictive with games. As for other software (for instance Windows), such a restriction is not too far from reality. I'm sure that Microsoft would love to use this on their next version of Windows or Office.

People will always play and share games, and anything that tries to stop that won't take off.
