View Full Version : Legends players?

Hi, there!
This is a roll call for anyone who plays legends on Ubuntu. You may know of the "Xandros Playing Fools," of which there are a few regular players. I was wondering whether we should collectively create another "clan" (in reality, XPF doesn't do much clanbased, such as organised practice or wars) and if so, what we should call it.
I wonder whether it would be better to simply have a big Linux clan, but if there are enough Ubuntu users, why not have our own to combat Xandros'?

What is "Legends"?
Can you point out some sites about this game? Screenshots etc.

It's a game quite similar to tribes. It's essentially a first-person shooter, where all players are equipped with jet packs, making it fast paced but less of a reaction-fest. Whilst it's possible for newbies to do well, to beat the pros requires practise to hone your instinct for where to lead the target.
It's relatively popular with Linux users because it's both free and multiplatform. Although the development work is currently slow, it is happening.
If you haven't tried it, it's worth a shot. Recently there's been a lot of activity in the form of clans, weekly planned games (often it's difficult to find other players) and new newbie practise nights. Check out the forums for up-to-the-minute information (I think the server query tool is broken, still)

I'm downloading it right now, and if i like it ... i'm in.
Maybe it's a good idea to integrate this in the existing [ubu-e] clan?

Quite possibly a good plan. The only thing is, ubu-e is a european clan... I think a lot of legends players are from the US.
Hopefully a few guys from ubu-e will nip over to this thread. Of the people who've already replied, who is from europe? It seems somewhat mean to advertise a new clan, then say that someone can't joined because it's european.
If we don't end up ubu-e, what clan name do you think we should have?

I'm from [ubu-e] :)
Well yeah it's a pity non-europeans can't join, but it's explained why in the thread.
You could always start a [ubu-a] or more general [ubu] clan.
I'll inform our clanleader about this... see what he thinks.
edit: btw i only get 4 servers in Ledgends with the combined total of 0 players.... ?

Yeah, I understand the logic - not complaining, just have reservations about whether it would be ideal.
And yes, legends has few players. It's not widely known, hence there's an effort to raise awareness. I guess getting clans of a similar style to [ubu-e] would be a help in terms of encouraging new players, and existing ones to play more often.
Generally, evenings (esp. weekends) there will be at least a small game going on, which gathers more players as the evening progresses. With clans, there's the opportunity for organising scheduled participation. Currently there are a few weekly scheduled games, but it wouldn't hurt for there to be more players, or for there to be more occupied nights.

My clan -- http://clan.gwos.org / http://forum.gwos.org -- plays Legends, few of us, probably 4 or 5 that play.
Your welcome to base your comms off of my forum, if you want to form a mini uby group to play.

OK, looks like it's worthwhile getting something on the road. Because this is just an idea to make friends between ubuntu users, rather than a serious clan effort, this is my plan:
Our 'clan' sign is UBU. Don't use square brackets, as it is a sign rather than a clan, so I could be perhaps UBU[DA]FishFace. If you don't belong to another clan, put something like an asterisk or | or ^ to separate the name and sign.
This is just a plan, not definite, yet, so tell me what you think. I'm not sure whether it's a good idea to say this isn't a real clan; it might be better to stop people joining other clans and be normal, as otherwise we don't have much of a sense of identity. Opinions please on this!!
Cheers,

am I the only one unable to download the torrent from their site?
I do get the download box in firefox, but it doesn't let me download at all. The box looks distorted even. (ffox 1.0.7)

No, you're not the only one. The torrent seems to be broken. I used that download instead: http://legendsthegame.net/index.php?m=fileswap&view=58
But I don't like that game very much. Never felt more like cannon fodder than in this game...

It takes a while to get used to. If you check the forums, there are regular newbie practise nights, where you can get taught the ropes, and hopefully people will be kind if they're veterans. The FAQ on the site details the more esoteric bits of the game, mainly skiing. The key to legends is to be in the air as much as possible, and to be moving as fast as possible if you're not. To move quickly, you ski, by holding down space whilst moving across the ground, especially downhill. This will give you massive speed, and make it very difficult for anyone but the best players to hit you.
When attacking, try to predict where an enemy will land and aim a disk there. Better players will tend to come to the ground, ski around and lift off again ASAP, meaning you have to get your shot in just as quickly. At range, most players use the grenade launcher and sniper rifle.
Hopefully this will stop any new players feeling totally lost amongst the veterans.

I really gave it a chance. But it doesn't seem to be my type of game.
I tried it first by setting up a local game for me alone to fiddle around a bit learning movement and keys. I wasn't aware that this game was public advertised, so soon I had a mentor at my side, who gave me some helpful hints (and bullets).
Having learned the basics about moving & dying, I tried a game at the Newbie server - and practised eben more ways of dying. I'm almost perfect in it now. I partially blame the high ping rate for that massacre (why do all servers have to be located in Timbuktu?). And the fact, that I'm overtrained by using more than three buttons at the same time (move, fly, zoom, shoot).

Sounds interesting...
There is a European Ubuntu users, ah ?
I am in USA by the way... haha. There is still no clan for Ubuntu USA ?

Well, Harleen, it certainly requires practise to be good at NOT dying :) I can't really say anything else other than thanks for giving it a go!

Hi guys
Thank's JurB for pointing this thread out to me.
I have not played this game yet in fact I'm just about to DL it and give it a whirl.
This looks interesting very interesting !
FishFace we have no problem with an extenstion to the [ubu-e] tag or adding another arm to the Ubuntu clan, I won't go into details why we have the -e in the tag, but I'm sure from reading the thread you already know why.
I would suggest perhaps [ubu-w] where the -w encompasses the world, or [ubu-L] for the game it's self, I do think that [ubu-?] would help continuity and aid in a feeling of identity with the exsisting [ubu-e] e-sports men & women. However the final choice is up to you & your members.
As you may or may not know we [ubu-e] are a rather loose clan  , by default we are a bunch of Ubuntu users who play TC:E. Having said that we do play in clan games and have joined a TC:E ladder.
I'm looking forward to giving Legends a whirl soon.
Good luck in your venture.

yeah, that's a good idea. OK, two options for the poll ( ;) ): first detailed above, second, clan [ubu-*] where * represents a location. Hence, [ubu-e], [ubu-us], [ubu-uk] etc. If there are enough Ubuntu gamers, this seems a reasonable system.
I wonder whether there's a medium between these two? My main reason for favouring the first is that it means that people who join ubu can play in a competetive clan, too. Due to the nature of the clan, there mustn't be a skill test for entry, which means it's unlikely to be for anyone who wants to play in the matches which are being started for legends.
What do the potential members think? :)

Right, seeing as noone's replied, everyone who's playing legends that's reading this (and that uses ubuntu) stick [UBU] in front of your name for the time being. Perhaps this will get things moving.

Wow. That is the first (real) game I've played in Ubuntu that really ran well. I'll be playing this more, for sure, and I'll have [Ubu] in front of my name :-)

I've actually defected to Debian, so you won't see me with ubu, unfortunately :) I'll try and catch you on there, though!

Check the forums to see the popular times. Evenings and weekends are the best bet - there's often an 8ish player game on.

Legends is pretty much tribes2 with all the good parts taken out of it. It's a fun game and I'd probably play it more if it weren't for the fact every time I do I keep wanting to set up more defenses, configure the sensor net, rearrange the turrets and do all the other little RTS things that most people ignored but would generally make the difference between winning and losing in a large game.

wait, you can't do that in legends?
