This is NOT by me. It's by willwill100, and I'd thought I'd bring it moreso to light of the Ubuntu community after spotting it on Digg.

I think it looks awesome. I hope the developer joins up and says a little somethin' somethin' about his piece.

Again, not by me. Major props to willwill100 of Devintart.com

The positive:
+ Looks absolutely great.
+ No trace of the old Windows 95 'gray squares' style can be found.
+ Wallpaper is very tasteful and non-intrusive.
+ Even though it uses a lot more advanced functions than the current layout, it's simpler.
+ My first spontaneous reaction was that this was an operating system I would like to use.

The negative:
- I'm not sure if Canonical and the Ubuntu developers are comfortable using AWN, Screenlets and GnomeDo by default. Though they could be implemented like Compiz Fusion is today (only activated when proper video drivers are loaded).
- Some things are very reminiscent of OS-X and Vista. This could cut both ways. People could look at it and think "It's typical of Linux to copy others", or they could think "This looks familiar, I could try this out".

Other thoughts:
* I would very much like to see a mockup of something like Open Office or Nautilus.
* I wonder if any current theme engine can recreate that look.
* Mounted partitions should not show up on the desktop as default.

I love how the artist moved away from the orange and introduced a pleasing yellow color.

The subtle gradients are a nice touch.

I've seen this mock ups around before and I would love for this to be the new theme in Ubuntu even if it doesnt include AWN and the other added things I still think it looks nice.

It has apparently been turned into a Brainstorm idea:

One of the best suggestions I've seen for 9.04 - although I don't like the yellow background in the menu.

If WillWill can't make this into an actual theme, I really hope someone will help him.

I don't think thats possible, is the gnome theme structure even capable of producing that yellowish menu? There will be a theme change when Topaz is released though.

Personally, I think this theme thing is just a waste of time, why not put time into developing an easy to use video editor like imovie, that is one of the main reasons people don't like Linux, there's just some no equivalent apps. I'm quite sure many OS X users would move if there was an iMovie, iDVD and Garageband equivalent.

I have seen this being banded about on the Mailing List's a few times now and i have to say i am getting tired of seening it.

Its a copy of OS X with some Vista thrown in to the mixture.](*,)

It's simply not good enough to copy what other people are doing, it has to be more orginal.

Leave the who is copying who debate to the Micrsoft and Apple fan boys. \\:D/

Whats wrong with copying? if Ubuntu could copy better then the default colour scheme wouldn't look like something you accidentally stepped in at the park...

Thats my overall point, better tools to customize is more important than a better out of box theme.

Whats wrong with organge ?!?!

Holy Snike is that cool! I have fallen in love with Ubuntu again! If only it could be used for good (the 8.10 release) instead of evil (getting my hopes up that it could be in the 8.10 release). If this get to gnome-look I will use it!

It is not a good marketing color. I read a book once that said that people that favor orange are manipulative and should not be trusted ;)

(I really did read that in a book, but I am saying it now to be funny)

Anyhow, as for themes, I understand if Mark wants to do the main theme his way, he is shelling out a lot of cash, and I am not so I can't argue. This theme looks great, why can't it be one of the options among the others that are not very good. Ubuntu is an amazing OS. It would be nice if it had at least one optional theme that was equally amazing, IMHO.

What about the mobile phone company Orange, they created a multi billion $ business with the colour and the name.

But if that were the case why arent Apple and Micrsoft's company colours orange :P

I'd really like to see a dark theme but not AWN, Screenlets and GnomeDo by default.

All of their commercials feature most black and white, except for the device or person using/is/connected to Vonage.

I really like this theme as well and I hope that it can be brought to fruition(and hopefully included in Ubuntu, if not as the default).

most companies that use orange used a bright fun orange, not a dark orange and brown. Orange can be fun, but Ubuntu's colors are not. They look like mud or something dirty. It is the brown, a very masculine color, that darkens it.

I've been surfin the net lately and have found plenty of people trying to make Will's mockup into a reality. Here's some of the better ones I've found:

GTK Themes:
Willibex (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/willibex?content=86844)
Ibex Will (http://www.gnome-look.org/content/show.php/Ibex+Will?content=86914)

GDM:
WillWill's GDM (http://danrabbit.deviantart.com/art/Willwill-s-Intrepid-GDM-94051500)
I am Sexy (http://gnome-look.org/content/show.php/I+am+sexy?content=86915)

I personally would love to see a GnomeDo theme as well similar to his :D

I disagree: Ubuntu uses orange and caramel, which connotes warmth and familiarity, whilst subtly catching your eye. A little more yellow glow might not go amiss, as would darkening and introducing a gradient on the panels, but Ubuntu's theme is one of the better ones as it is.
