help with toolbar startup

When i installed ubuntu, the toolbar was not there..there where no start up buttons , nothing was there.

I have gone to the Window control window and tried some options, unfortunately when i enter my password it says invalid even though it is the correct password!!Please any help would be very much appreciated!!!!!I am using another pc BTW

Boot into failsafe, log in as root and change the password with
passwd <your_username_goes_here>
