I have recently aquired some audio books in apples m4b format.
Some of them will play in totem but won`t add to my ipod producing this error -
Could not open '/media/disk/music/audio books/the audiobook.m4b' for reading, or file is not an mp4 file.
The following track could not be processed (filetype is known but analysis failed): '/media/disk/music/audio books/theaudiobook.m4b'

I can add the others to my ipod using gtkpod-aac and they play fine, but they will not play on the computer -

"audio book...theaudiobook.mp4" cannot be opened

No application suitable for automatic installation
is available for handling this kind of file.

All the files have the m4b extension.

They were all aquired from the same source.

When viewing the folder contents, the ones that play on the pc have an icon/thumbnail thingy. The ones that play on the ipod don`t, just the blank piece of paper document icon thingy.

Anyone help?
Thanks

Update.
All the files will play on my streaming device (squeezebox) but very slowly, like the narrator is drunk and underwater.
Do I need to install an extra codec or something?

Ok, does anyone know of a way to convert these damn m4b files to mp3?
Thanks.

You could try ffmpeg.

Wow, where did you dig that one up from?

I managed in the end but I can`t remember how. The issue was to put a load of Roald Dahl books on to my ipod for a 7 hour trip to Scotland with the kids.

The books worked a dream.
