Alright so I rarely ever post questions on te internet because cahnces are someone else has asked the same question first...well I've been scouring this damned internet all day and can never seem to find the question or answer I need.
I am running Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Desktop Edition on a Dell Latitude D600. This lappy has had 0 hardware changes since coming out of the box. I'm not sure what sort of network gadgets it has although I believe it is Truemobile or something to that effect.
Alot of people have the issue of getting drivers to work and allow ubuntu to connect to devices. My issue is that Ubuntu can't find the damned wireless card. When connected via a LAN cable, the internet connects fine and when I right-click the network icon, it only allows me to "Enable Networking" and doesn't give me the choice of "Enable Wireless" that everyone says must be checked.
Furthermore when I go to system->admin->network, it only has options for wired connection and point-to-point connection...There's no wireless there. Also I tried doing ndiswrapper but trying to install the windows drivers with wine caused an error saying that the hardware is not present.
Now I know for a fact the hardware is present because i was able to connect to wireless netowrks jsut fine when i had windows xp on this machine. So I went to the bios....the wirless was disabled...wtf....so I enabled it and made sure everything was turned on....then went back through all this above **** again and it still doesn't work.
I'm at a complete loss...what must I do to make the ubuntu system recognize my wireless?
