Formatted it and installed Linux. My new HP didn't come with a Vista recovery CD and I didn't think twice. I never do...

I bought a HP Laptop last year(day before Gutsy was released) and it came with Vista Home Premium. I formatted the recovery partition and Vista Home Premium off and installed Vista Ultimate and Gutsy. I keep vista for games and the financial software.

I formatted and installed Linux... blindly. I don't really regret it though.

It was my wife's laptop, and she had me format it and install Linux.

Formatted and installed Ubuntu.
I played around with Vista for a few hours and must say it's far better than xp (pro). I don't see why people are complaining.

Used vista for about 2 months as fiesty wouldn't boot on my new machine, then Gutsy alphas started hitting the site and it did boot, never booted windows since.
I now run Ubuntu, Open suse & fedora on 3 machines with no intention of ever booting windows on one of my PC's (Or families) again.

Set up a dual boot as seeing the only way to update my BIOS is through Windows using Winflash.

The only reason I left Vista on the dirve was because my wife likes it. I did dual boot with Hardy though so I don't actually use Vista. However, I have plans to wipe Vista and install XP for here once I have some time.

Dual booted. Then Vista broke up so I still got in on its partition while being totally useless. I have been such a lazy ba***rd for fixing this up.
Im having a hard time with Ubuntu now, which is also failing, so I might get another OS and wipe the hard disk off...

I resized the Windows Vista partition and installed Ubuntu. I rarely need Windows, so I set GRUB to boot into Ubuntu by default with timeout 0. The only way to boot into Vista is to turn the computer on with the Dell DirectMedia Button instead of the power button.
Justice be made, though: I had some issues installing SP1 but other than that Vista runs quite fine. I simply prefer Ubuntu.

Formatted Vista installed Ubuntu then restored Vista then re-installed Ubuntu to set up dual-boot.
Only kept Vista because my son likes to use it sometimes.

Even before I used Linux, the first thing I would always do wipe the disk and reinstall Windows. A nice clean (or as nice and clean as Windows can be) slate with no crapware.

From cd?
Just wondering cause you usually -
1. dont get the windows cd
2. dont get your windows key
3. to reinstall you reinstall from a partition
4. this installs the crap again.

The first HP lappy I acquired came with a clean Windows XP with it. It was a pain to update because it was not even SP1, but it was clean. The second HP lappy I bought had this partition crap that I hated. The default install, with crapware that included a trial version of Norton, ate up to 50 Gb.
Now I'm with a Dell Vostro 1400 and one of the things I like about the Vostro line is that they have freedom of bloatware as a feature while still being non-expensive. I almost never use Vista, but having ways to do a truly clean install is surely good.

Can I also point out the lack of a "kept vista cause I want to" option?

I usually:
Ordered the CD
Always had the key on the registration sticker
Wiped the disk
Skipped the CD that said "system utilities"
But I don't have to worry about that anymore with Ubuntu! :guitar:

When I bought my Latitude D630 in November 2007 it came with Vista Business. I formatted and installed Windows XP Professional SP2. When I received an updated Vista Business w/ SP1 disk from Microsoft I installed that. No issues and it is running as well if not better than XP.

This is precisely what I did, and it was that way till a few weeks ago; I realised I never used Vista anymore and now I run purely Ubuntu.

My parents got a new laptop, which never made it to vista--the xp install disk intercepted it. I'd have been glad to install fedora or k/ubuntu on it, but the smallest change to the location of an icon gets me tech-support calls from them...

I bought a bigger hard drive and installed Kubuntu on it
I keep the old one with visa on it locked up in the basement
and I only let it out for warranty reasons.

I have Vista dualbooted on one computer, mainly for web testing. It has a tiny partition and stays out of the way.
I overwrote it on my other computers.
