Am considering getting a laptop. So far its been confusing and i need help.
Am not much of a gamer but i need some gpu for intensive compiz show off and smooth game play of games like Americas Army. ( i guess an Nvidia will do)
For Hard disk about 300GB should be enough
For Memory 3GB
Now the processor is the main problem. Should I go for an AMD or Intel Core 2 Duo. I've been hearing that support for 64bit computing is still a bit awkward. Would i be wasting money by going for a 64 bit ?
Also does anyone know of any clearance sale going on so i can get a cheap deal :lolflag:

both the intel CPUs and AMD CPUs are 64 bit now and actually the AMDs are cheaper in general but have lower performance. personally I go for the C2D.

Take a look at system76

go for the intel dual cores, more pricy yes but worth it :D

Intel all the way! I'll never use anything else.

Thanks. Okay so Intel is okay then. But would i be installing the 64 bit ubuntu ? or if i install the 32 bit version would it fully utilize the cores ?
Would i have to start compiling my own debs because 64 bits aren't available ?

I have the C2D but I'm running 32 bit 8.04. Support for 64 bit is getting better all the time though, and I plan to switch to 64 bit when 8.10 is released.

you can order preinstalled Ubuntu from system76.com but not sure if they ship to your location

64bit should work better on a 64 bit system. I've heard they have most of the bugs worked out now

I would just use the 32 bit system, it will work either way.

Both versions will fully utilize the cores. The reason why most people switch is because they want to fully utilze their RAM. The 32 bit version without enabling PAE will not read more than 4 GB of RAM.

C2D are the best now.
If you plan on using more than 4GB of RAM, you have to get a 64bit system.
