Hi everyone,

I have been using a new low power Geode board Alix 2C3 as a firewall/wlan router. I was so impressed that I am now looking at the Alix 1C board (www.pcengines.ch) as a low power desktop replacement (with vesa mount behind screen).
This box will have a "NAS" session running "always on" and will serve file sharing through the network (USB storage), run slimserver and a bitorrent client.
If a user wants to use the machine as desktop replacement he will start a parallel session and run xfce or another lightweight windows manager.

So my plan is to put a 4gb flash card onto the board to reduce energy consumption. And install ubuntu 8.04lts server. Until there it all seems doable to me. Here is where it snags: could I add a laptop ide drive as local storage to house the /home and /swap of the desktop sessions only? Leaving the main "always on" session work off of the flash?

Please let me know if this is not clear. Basically I want to build a machine that will run on its own, as a NAS off of a flash drive. And occasionally someone will fire up a desktop session with all of the "write" happening on a laptop drive.

Would this be possible?

Thanks
Christian
