Pidgin is a good multi-protocol messenger client, and is very popular (formerly known as GAIM).

I don't know if aMSN is in the standard repositories or not.

Go to GetDeb.net and download the appropriate Ubuntu .deb file:
http://www.getdeb.net/app/aMSN

Then double-click the .deb file to install it.

Pidgin is an instant messenger client. You should definitely give that a shot, too. See which you like better.

Try
sudo apt-get install amsn

Oh, yeah. You're right. It's in the Universe repositories (http://packages.ubuntu.com/hardy/amsn).

I think those are enabled by default in Ubuntu 8.04.

To the OP, this is how you use Synaptic Package Manager to install software:

i would agee with you if only pidgin supprts voice chat that would be a complete package, thats why most of us install messengers like amsn

because it supports cam (ehem) not voice at the moment,

im using skype anyway good for voice talk
